Blanket

Corin Sworn
December 9 - January 21, 2011
Opening Reception Thursday December 9th, 2010, 6-9pm

Blanket Gallery is pleased to present a second solo exhibition with Corin Sworn. Sworn’s exhibition for Blanket Gallery continues her interest in the use of artifacts as indexes to assist particular stories. Her present work examines the reflexive viewer or reader as they make sense of their experience through the interpretive acts that these stories encourage. In the video work The Lens Prism an actor performs various narratives in an empty theatre. These stories are delivered either as memory or as the citation of research.  Each describes some structure of digressions - Chris Marker’s La Jette, a poem by Raymond Roussel or the Great Exhibition of 1851. The stories although reflecting one another remain separate and contemplation is prolonged as a movement though rather than as a conclusion to be reached. A companion piece uses formal aspects of the film script to suggest it as a structure that encompasses both sequences that are attended to by the camera as well as other latent content that never manifests on screen.

Sworn has recently presented solo exhibitions at Tramway and Glasgow International 2010. Group exhibitions include: Lewis Glucksman Gallery, ICA London, the Witte de With, EASTInternatinal, the Kunsthalle Basel, the Contemporary Art Gallery, Bogota, Participant Inc. New York as well as The Belkin Art Gallery in Vancouver. In 2011 Sworn will have a screening at Hors Pistes Festival 2011 at the Centre Pompidou. She studied psychology and art history at the University of British Columbia, obtained BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of the Arts and an MFA from the Glasgow School of Art.
